Deadly Earthquake in Nepal: 157 Dead and Dozens Injured; Search and Rescue Efforts Underway

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaThe earthquake that rocked remote areas in Nepal on Friday (3/11/2023) killed at least 157 people and injured dozens. The German Geoscience Research Center measured the quake at 5.7 on the Richter scale, while the US Geological Survey estimated the quake at 5.6 on the Richter scale.

Reporting from AFP, the earthquake was felt in the Indian capital, New Delhi, nearly 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the epicenter. The 157 deaths were said to have been recorded in the Jajarkot and Rukum areas. A total of 199 other people were injured in the earthquake.

Meanwhile, Home Ministry spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said the death toll is unlikely to increase significantly. Some victims may still be under the rubble.

However, officials fear the death toll in the quake will rise because they were unable to make contact in hilly areas near the epicenter, about 500 km (300 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu, where tremors were also felt. The district has a population of 190,000 with villages scattered across remote hills.

Meanwhile, the earthquake also caused landslides. That way, search and rescue must clear roads blocked by landslides to reach the affected areas.

If we look at it historically, in the past there were earthquakes which claimed thousands of lives and were of greater strength than the current earthquake.

Reporting from National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center (Gorvernment of Nepal)the 1934 AD earthquake was the most powerful earthquake that ever occurred in Nepal, with the loss of life to more than 16,000 people, including from Nepal and India combined.
