After a strong earthquake occurred in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan on New Year’s Day, as of 4 p.m. today, 126 people had been killed in the strong earthquake, at least 516 people were slightly or seriously injured, and 210 people were missing. Ishikawa Prefecture Governor Chihiro announced in the evening that a state of emergency was declared in order to cope with the great damage caused by the Noto Peninsula earthquake.

According to reports from NHK and Kyodo News, Governor Chihiro said at a meeting of the Disaster Management Headquarters Committee that “this is an unprecedented disaster. In order to save Noto, a state of emergency has been declared in the name of the prefectural government.” Governor Chihao emphasized that all employees of the county government will participate in disaster response and prepare for rapid recovery and reconstruction.

The Japan Broadcasting Association (NHK) reported that a strong earthquake with a maximum magnitude of 7.0 occurred on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on the afternoon of the 1st. The Ishikawa Prefectural Government stated that as of 4 pm today, a total of 126 people had been confirmed to have died in the prefecture, including Wajima City. 69 people, 38 people in Suzu City, 9 people in Anamizu Town, 5 people in Nanao City, 2 people in Noto Town, 2 people in Shiga Town, and 1 person in Haza City.

The Japan Meteorological Agency pointed out that this is the second earthquake since the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake that killed more than 100 people directly or indirectly due to earthquake disasters.

If we look at the number of casualties directly caused by the earthquake, this strong earthquake has exceeded the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.

NHK compiled Japan’s earthquake disasters that killed more than 100 people in the past 30 years and pointed out that in the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, due to successive building collapses and fires, including earthquake-related deaths after the disaster, a total of 6,434 people were killed.

In the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (called the 311 Great Earthquake in Taiwan), a huge earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 triggered a tsunami with a height of more than 10 meters. There were as many as 22,215 people dead and missing related to the earthquake.

In the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, violent shaking with a maximum magnitude of 7 occurred twice, killing a total of 276 people in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures. However, up to 80% of the victims of the Kumamoto earthquake were disaster-related. If we look at the number of people who died directly due to the earthquake, the Noto Peninsula earthquake has exceeded the Kumamoto earthquake.
