In Afghanistan, rescue workers were still searching for survivors under the rubble after Saturday’s earthquake on Monday. More than two thousand people were killed.
The earthquake occurred in western Afghanistan, near the city of Herat. Many houses have collapsed. Video footage shows that some villages have been completely destroyed.
Being a remote part of the country, it was difficult to reach the region quickly. But the rescue teams have been working for quite some time now and sometimes still pull living people out from under the rubble. Neighboring countries Pakistan and Iran, among others, have already pledged assistance.
The magnitude 6.3 earthquake is one of the deadliest this year. In addition to the more than 2,000 deaths, about 2,000 people have also been injured, according to the Taliban, who hold power in Afghanistan.

Many women and children injured
Two-thirds of the seriously injured are women and children. This was reported by employee Alaa AbouZeid of the World Health Organization WHO to the news agency Reutersafter a tour of various hospitals.
According to him, this is because the earthquake happened at 11 a.m. (local time). Many men were out of the house at that time. Women and children were at home, so many ended up under the rubble.
AbouZeid also states that it is important that money remains available for humanitarian aid. Especially now that there are other conflicts elsewhere in the world, such as in Ukraine and very recently the fighting in Israel and in Palestinian territory.
In addition, health care in Afghanistan has had to make significant cuts in recent times, because the country is largely dependent on donor money from abroad. But since the Taliban took power in the country in 2021, many countries have cut off their aid.
