Deadly Disease Impacting Stray Cats in Cyprus: Treatment Costs and Contagious Variants

Some 300,000 cats in Cyprus have succumbed to the disease since January, according to a staff member of PAWS Cyprus, a local cat welfare organization.

The Felien coronavirus is often harmless, but it can still lead to FIP. This disease causes, among other things, fever and lethargy, and is fatal within days to weeks if the infected cat is not treated.

Treatment duration

Treatment is possible, but very expensive. The drug that can save cats costs between 3000 and 7000 euroswrites AFP.

Scientists suggest that it is possible that a more contagious variant of the virus is circulating on the island than previously known, but whether this is actually the case is not yet certain.

Because the registration of sick cats on the island is difficult, and many dead cats are not found because cats often withdraw when they are about to die, much is still unclear about the exact spread of the disease.

stray cats

Cyprus has many stray cats. It is estimated that the island, which is home to 1.2 million people, is home to about one million cats.

For the time being, no outbreaks of the disease have been observed in other places. The virus is not transmissible to humans.
