In the early morning of March 31, strong winds, lightning, and heavy rainfall occurred in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China. According to China Central Television, this severe convective weather has killed 4 people and injured more than 10 people in Nanchang City.

Among the four people killed in this incident, three were from the same building in the Weimeng Qingshuiwan Community on Fanghu Road, Nanchang County, Nanchang City. One of the women lived on the 11th floor, and the other woman and her grandson lived on the 20th floor. All three fell from the building after their windows were blown out and were swept away by strong winds. Among them, Mr. Wan, who lived on the 11th floor, escaped because he and his wife slept in separate rooms, but his wife unfortunately died.

Recalling the scene at that time, Mr. Wan said that he heard a loud noise and ran to his wife’s room to call her. He found that the window was blown out by the strong wind. He braved the wind and rain to search indoors and couldn’t find anyone, so he went outside the room to call her. She also had no answer. Later, the wind calmed down a bit and he heard crying downstairs. He quickly went downstairs to check the situation and saw his wife lying on the ground with no signs of life. He was immediately filled with grief. Not far away, the grandfather and grandson of another family upstairs were also blown to the ground by the strong wind. They both died unfortunately. Their family members were crying sadly at the scene.

Another pair of grandparents who died lived on the 20th floor above Mr. Wan’s house. Mr. Xu, the resident involved, described that at about 3 a.m. on March 31, strong winds blew away the windows of his living room and bedroom. The sleeping 64-year-old mother and 11-year-old son were swept out of the house by strong air currents and unfortunately fell to their deaths.

Mr. Xu said that that night he, his wife and their daughter slept in the master bedroom. His father slept alone, and his mother slept with her son in a small room. When the incident occurred, he was awakened by a loud noise, and when he got up, he found that the living room was in a mess. He immediately went to check on his family’s safety and found that his mother and son were no longer in the room, the windows in the room were missing, and even the bed was only a shelf with the mattress on it missing.

Mr. Xu forced himself to calm down, quickly arranged for his family, hid in the bathroom and called the police. After the strong wind outside stabilized, he went downstairs to check the situation and saw his mother lying on the ground and his son nearby. Not far away was another resident lying nearby. It was later found out that she was the wife of Mr. Wan on the 11th floor.

A reporter from Mainland China visited the area on April 1 and saw that the community was devastated. Many trees as thick as a bowl had been uprooted, and a large number of glass and brick fragments were scattered on the ground next to some buildings. Several shorter buildings in the community were slightly damaged, but the tallest high-rise buildings in the community were severely damaged. A resident in the community who is over 60 years old also told reporters, “I haven’t seen such strong winds in decades, it is estimated to be at least level 10!”

A video of the time has also been circulated on the Internet, allowing people to imagine the scene on that day. In the video, the living room of an apartment was peaceful. The hostess in pajamas watched her children playing on the floor of the living room, then turned around and went into the house to handle her own affairs. A few seconds later, the floor-to-ceiling window to the balcony in the living room collapsed, and a strong air flow carried it. The heavy rain suddenly poured into the living room, and the hostess rushed into the living room, grabbed the child from the messy floor, and ran away.

Chinese netizens saw the video circulating on the Internet and said: “It’s so scary, what kind of evil wind”, “Fortunately the sofa blocked the glass and didn’t hit the child”, “French windows on high floors are a safety hazard”, and some people said: “This It’s because the stress-bearing areas of the door lock and hinges are not up to standard, and it’s a construction quality issue.”

The local police said on April 1 that the matter is still being handled and there are no suspects at the moment. As for whether construction quality issues are involved, the police are still investigating the situation and will handle it in accordance with the law if there are any problems.
