Deadly Collision between Sugeng Rahayu and Eka Fast Buses: Lessons Learned

Jakarta

The public was shocked by the bullfighting incident between Eka Fast and Sugeng Rahayu buses on the Ngawi-Madiun route, East Java, Thursday (31/8). Due to the deadly accident, two vehicles were heavily damaged and three people including the driver were reported dead.

East Java Polda Dirlantas Kombes Muhammad Taslim Chairuddin emphasized that there were two main reasons why the two buses experienced bullfights, namely the bus driver’s negligence and the pedestrians’ carelessness.

“The accident occurred on a straight road with sufficient lighting. It is strongly suspected that it was due to the negligence of the Sugeng Bus driver and the pedestrians he avoided,” Taslim said through his official statement to reporters, quoted Friday (1/9).

Taslim explained that the incident started when the Sugeng Rahayu bus was traveling at high speed from the direction of Ngawi to Madiun or Surabaya. In the middle of the road suddenly there was a pedestrian who was about to cross.

The Sugeng bus driver was then shocked and swerved to the right, hitting the Eka Fast bus that was traveling on the opposite side, from Madiun to Ngawi.

“The information is that the Sugeng Bus, when avoiding pedestrians, swerved, changed lanes and collided with the right front of the Eka Fast bus coming from the opposite direction,” he explained.

“This means that negligence begins with pedestrians who are likely to cross the road without seeing the situation, then negligence is also carried out by bus drivers who do not maintain speed, so that when a pedestrian crosses or is about to cross the road, they are unable to control the vehicle so that the accident occurs,” he added. .

The incident resulted in the death of two drivers and a pedestrian. In addition, there were 14 people who reportedly suffered minor injuries. So, what are the important lessons to be learned?

Important Lessons from Bus Bull Fighting Incident in Ngawi

Driving safety expert from Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI), Sony Susmana said, bus drivers should be able to maintain speed while on the road. What’s more, they traversed areas inhabited by many people.

“So the accident could have been avoided if the driver kept his speed, as we know: where are the buses going at a slower speed?” said Sony to detikOto.

Second, continued Sony, the bus driver should not have swerved when he saw another object in front of him. Moreover, he said, swerve the steering wheel to the opposite lane. That can lead to bullfights which are even more severe.

“Dodging can be done with hard braking, not slamming in another direction where there is an object too. Is braking suddenly dangerous? Yes, that’s why, come back again, keep your speed,” he said.

According to Sony, in this situation, swerving and suddenly braking are equally wrong. However, he said, the driver must have a priority scale.

“So it depends on the object in front of it. But swerving is more risky because of changing lanes, the possibility of meeting another vehicle from the opposite direction,” he said.
