Fierce clashes occurred between military forces Filipina and local militant groups in the southern region of the country, when Manila hunt down the mastermind militants Catholic mass bombing Of Marawi late last year. At least seven people died in the clashes.
As reported AFPMonday (19/2/2024), Philippine military spokesman Colonel Louie Dema-ala told AFP that the clash occurred in a forest area near the town of Munai on the island Mindanao on Sunday (18/2) local time.
“This is part of the operation against Dawlah Islamiyah. Unfortunately, we suffered casualties,” said Dema-ala in his statement.
The seven victims killed in the clash consisted of six Filipino soldiers and one local militant. One body of the dead militant was left behind by a group of armed militants who withdrew from the scene of the clash.
Four other Filipino soldiers, Dema-ala said, were injured in the clash.
The Dawlah Islamiyah group is one of several small armed factions that have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS). The group claimed responsibility for the bombing of a Catholic mass in Marawi on December 3, 2023, which killed four people and injured dozens of others.
The Philippine military said that 10 members of Dawlah Islamiyah were killed last month, including their leader Gaddafi Mimbesa who was believed to be the main mastermind behind the bombing.
