Deadly Clashes in Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian Refugee Camp: 15 Dead and Over 150 Injured

On Thursday, the number of deaths as a result of the ongoing clashes in the “Ain al-Hilweh” Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon a week ago rose to 15, in addition to more than 150 wounded.

The official Lebanese News Agency confirmed that this round of clashes, which were described as the most violent, “renewed this morning on all axes, and the number of its victims since its outbreak last Thursday reached 15 dead and more than 150 wounded.”

The agency added today, “The intensity of the clashes on Thursday morning, on the various axes of the Ain al-Hilweh camp, decreased to a level of cautious calm, after the sounds of shells and bullets disappeared, and the eastern highway (the main road) linking the south to the city of Sidon (south) was opened.”

In this context, the Islamic Jihad and Hamas movements called on Thursday to “stop the clashes in Ain al-Hilweh” because they “only serve the enemy and suspicious projects.”

Both sides confirmed Joint statement“The seriousness of the clashes taking place in Ain al-Hilweh camp.”

The two sides pointed out that “the fighting is against the will of the Palestinian people, and only serves the Zionist enemy and the suspicious projects that target the Palestinian camps in order to erase the refugee issue.”

These clashes came after a lull that lasted about a month, following armed confrontations at the end of last July, which then led to the killing of 14 people, including the commander of the National Security Forces in the camp affiliated with the Fatah movement, Al-Armushi, and 4 of his companions.

The “Ain al-Hilweh” camp is considered one of the largest Palestinian camps in Lebanon, along with 11 other camps, where the number of Palestinian refugees in the country is estimated at about 300,000 refugees.
