At least 21 people have died and 18 have been injured after a bus fell off an overpass to Mestre in Venice and later caught fire near train tracks.
Because it is important? According to local authorities, it was a tourist bus that was traveling to a camp and it has been learned that among the injured there are at least two Spaniards.
The facts: The bus fell off the footbridge that crossed the highway and fell between a warehouse and the train tracks. When it fell, the vehicle ended up catching fire due to its contact with the power lines.
The accident has caused 21 deaths, including two children, and 18 injured, six of whom are in very serious condition and have been transferred to hospitals. Among the injured are at least two Spanish nationals. Four Ukrainians, a German, a Frenchman, a Croatian and two Austrians have also been identified. The first hypotheses suggest that the driver, a 40-year-old man who also died, would have felt unwell, since there is no evidence of any braking and the bus was traveling on a straight road. The accident has forced the suspension of rail service on the line connecting Maestro with Venice.
What do they say? The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has expressed “her deep condolences”: “I am in contact with the mayor Luigi Brugnaro and the Minister of Transport, Matteo Salvini, to follow the information of this tragedy,” she indicated in a statement.
The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, indicated that the bus “was full of people returning from work” and classified the incident as “an apocalyptic scene”, reported the AdnKronos news agency. The Italian president, Sergio Mattarella, has also spoken out and has indicated on the official account of the Presidency on the social network X that he has called Brugnaro “to express his condolences for the very serious tragedy in Mestre.”
