Deadly Building Fire in Manhattan Leaves 17 Injured, 1 Dead: FDNY Reports

NEW YORK — A raging fire Friday afternoon left 17 people injured in a Manhattan building and one dead, the New York City Fire Department said. Of the injured, four are in critical condition.

The 2-alarm fire started around 2:14 pm on the third floor of a 6-story building located at 2 Saint Nicholas Place between W 149 Street y Edgecombe Avenue in Hamilton Heights. More than 100 firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene and had to perform 3 rope rescues, an unusual situation for them during these events, FDNY officials said during a press conference.

When they arrived they found residents on the emergency stairs and people trapped in the windows. After the strong flames, they found three people unconscious on the upper floors of the building.

Several of the injured were transported to area hospitals.

“It was so dangerous and challenging to rescue people,” officials said during a news conference.

The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
