Dublin : One person was killed in a bomb blast at a hotel housing refugees in Dublin. No one else was reported injured. Other residents of the center were evacuated following the incident. The deceased is reported to be from Eastern Europe. The initial assessment is that the explosion was caused by something kept under the bed where he was lying. However, this will only be clarified once the Garda have completed a technical inspection.
In the explosion, the wall of the hotel that separated men and women in the building collapsed. The family members of the deceased were also in the building. But De Paul explained that no one else was hurt. Gardaí, the Army’s bomb squad and the bomb disposal unit robot are all camping at the site. The initial conclusion is that the explosion took place in only one room. Gardai have no other suspects at this time.
Firefighters from Phibsborough, Tara Street and North Strand fire stations and advanced paramedic teams brought the situation under control within a short time. Five fire engines along with the district officer attended the scene. ESB Networks, Gas Networks Ireland and An Garda Síochána were all in attendance.
A serious investigation is underway into the incident. An explosion that shook the country took place yesterday at three o’clock at the hotel in Little Britain Street, Dublin. The explosion occurred in the building of Vincent DePaul, a homeless organization. There was also a fire at this center in March 2022. A woman was burnt that day.
De Pauline was able to provide beds to all those who were on the streets after the blast by evening, but it is not clear where they will be rehabilitated. A spokesperson said in a statement that DePaul is liaising with the Dublin Region Homeless Executive and NGOs. All the refugees are now housed in a locked church in George’s Hill. Beds can be spread on the floor.
Gardai said the exact cause of the explosion was being investigated. The Technical Bureau was at the scene. No further information is available. This is an isolated incident and the Vincent DePaul organization said that it will resettle the refugees with the help of other organizations.
