NEW YORK — A raging fire in Brooklyn has claimed the life of a woman and left four young children fighting for their lives in a hospital. The fire occurred early Tuesday morning and according to the New York City Police it was possibly an arson attack.
The authorities released few details about the events behind the accident that devoured a three-story house located in Fountain Avenue in the East New York neighborhood. The flames appeared to start at the front door and quickly spread to the stairwell and then up to the second level, fire officials said. Sheriffs investigating the case say an accelerant was found at the scene.
The identity and age of the woman who died had not been released Tuesday morning. Four children, a 9-year-old boy and girls ages 10, 14 and 17, were hospitalized in critical condition, the FDNY said.
The nature of his injuries is unknown. A man was also pulled from the burning home, police said. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition. His age was not clear, but the victims are believed to be members of the same family.
“Anytime you see, you know, a whole family like that together, at this time of night, I mean, with a fire… the emotions run high,” said Assistant City Fire Department (FDNY) Chief Chuck Downey, at a press conference. “It’s very emotional.”
Sixty firefighters responded to the blaze, one of whom suffered minor injuries, authorities added. Video from the fire site showed the charred remains of the building and a group of first responders in the area. A crime scene tent was also seen being erected outside the destroyed structure early Tuesday.
The investigation is ongoing.
