Deadly Airstrike in Sudan’s Market: Dozens Killed, Raise Concerns for Civilian Casualties

At least forty people have been killed in a new airstrike on a market in Sudan. Several people were injured. The country is ravaged by violent conflicts that cause many civilian casualties.

The attack took place in the town of Nyala, in southwestern Sudan. Emergency workers say the injured are being treated at the city’s only open hospital.

The Darfur region, in which the city is located, has been very restless for some time, authorities and aid organizations say. Violence seems to be increasing again in recent days. On Sunday, fifty people were also killed in air raids on the capital Khartoum.

In April, armed conflict broke out between the army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces. This was caused by a power struggle between their leaders. After almost five months, neither warring faction has a clear upper hand.
