At least 26 people were killed in an air strike targeting the battle-scarred Amhara region of Ethiopia, a medical official and a resident told AFP on Monday.
The strike that took place on Sunday was the most violent since clashes erupted between members of the Ethiopian army and the local “Fano” militia in towns and cities in the Amhara region, against the backdrop of months-long tensions.
“22 bodies were taken to the hospital, while four others who were seriously injured died soon after their arrival,” said an official at a hospital in the city of Venuti Salam.
“So far, we have received 55 wounded people, more than 40 of them seriously,” the official said, asking not to be identified.
One resident confirmed that he “helped bury thirty victims later” on Sunday.
“A medium-sized freight vehicle was completely destroyed in an air strike, and bodies were scattered around it,” he said.
On the fourth of August, the Ethiopian government headed by Abiy Ahmed imposed a state of emergency in the Amhara region, and the curfew is still in effect in several cities, despite the decline in violence late last week.
The violence has raised concerns about the stability of Africa’s second most populous country, seven months after a peace deal that ended a brutal two-year conflict in the neighboring Tigray region.
