Deadly accident involving excavator becomes more sinister
We previously covered how a high-profile father and CEO along with his teenage daughter died in a freak excavator accident in a Utah canyon over the summer. Now, new information in that case indicates that the driver towing that excavator lied to police and, as a result, is now facing felony charges.
Someone crashed their Rolls-Royce supposedly in a street race.
It was July 6 when Richard Hendrickson, CEO of Lifetime Products, along with his 16-year-old daughter Sally, were hit by a bulldozer that fell off a flatbed trailer and onto their GMC Sierra in Ogden Canyon. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two adult passengers in the Sierra survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
Local station KSL recently obtained charging documents indicating that police concluded the bulldozer was too heavy for the truck towing it and was not properly secured. But the driver allegedly lied to investigators about both spots at the crash site. Now he’s in big trouble.
In October, the man was arrested and charged with several felonies. Obviously, this is an ongoing legal case, so the man towing the excavator is considered innocent until proven guilty in court. But the police seem to be sure enough that he lied and was at fault.
In general, we have to say that if you are ever involved in an accident, fatal or not, simply tell the police the truth to the best of your knowledge and understanding. We have seen many other accidents where drivers lied and then were caught in that lie with indisputable evidence.
Given how many people are on the road today with dash cameras and other recording technology, it is easier than ever to prove that someone has lied about what caused an accident.
