At around 4:16 pm on the 1st, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. Due to this earthquake, a tsunami warning has been issued along the entire northwestern coast of Japan.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) on this day, the magnitude of this earthquake was around 6. The seismic intensity, which is the relative perceived intensity of an earthquake, is classified from 0 to 7 (including 5 weak, 5 strong, 6 weak, and 6 strong). The seismic intensity observed during the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and the Kumamoto Earthquake in 2016 was 7. Damage has not yet been calculated.
Due to the earthquake, a large tsunami warning with a maximum height of 5 meters was issued on the Noto Peninsula. A tsunami of 3 meters is expected in Toyama Prefecture, Yamagata Prefecture, and Fukui Prefecture. A 1.2m tsunami has already reached Ishigawa. After NHK and other broadcasters stopped regular broadcasting, the announcer shouted, “We need to run away quickly,” while reporting the earthquake situation.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida received reports of the earthquake, collected information at the Prime Minister’s Office Crisis Management Center, and announced that necessary measures should be taken. Japanese government spokesman Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi held an emergency press conference and said, “Move to a safe place immediately,” and “The damage is being confirmed.”
Kashiwazaki is home to Japan’s largest nuclear power plant. NHK reported, “The nuclear power plant is currently out of operation.” Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi announced regarding the nuclear power plant, “It has been confirmed that there is no problem so far.”
