[花蓮(台湾) 4日 ロイター] – More than 1,000 people were injured in the magnitude (M) 7.2 earthquake that occurred in Taiwan on the 3rd. The death toll remains at nine, but the whereabouts of 42 people who were headed to a hotel in the national park are still unknown.
The earthquake occurred on the morning of the 3rd. The main damage occurred in Hualien, an area in the east near the epicenter. Buildings in the capital, Taipei, were shaken violently, but damage and disruption were limited to a small scale.
According to fire authorities, 1,038 people were injured and 48 people are missing, including 42 hotel employees.
Disaster management authorities said on the night of the 3rd that they were focusing on searching for the hotel employee who was headed to the national park.
Fire authorities announced on the 4th that six people who were trapped in the mining area were rescued by helicopter.
The rail line to Hualien was reopened ahead of schedule on the 4th, according to the railway administration, but a station in the city’s northern suburbs was damaged and closed.
