“With these tight lines, you couldn’t allow yourself to vote”, says Lioba Nägele from the Museum for Communication in Frankfurt am Main. “They were conversations that were mediated through Fräuleins.”
Around 750 calls per day were possible. “An old technique was used, namely the so-called backward construction”, explains Nägele. “The caller got his connection when all positions were successfully ready – that you didn’t have to pay the entire waiting time.”
