Deadline Approaching: Salvadoran Immigrants Urged to Renew Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Avoid Deportation

This coming September 10 is the deadline for some 240,000 Salvadoran immigrants to renew their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and receive relief from deportation.

The program, first granted in March 2001, was extended by the White House after rescinding the termination of the benefit ordered during the Donald Trump administration.

The new protection is valid for 18 months and will be active from September 10, 2023 to March 9, 2025.

In addition to being protected from deportation for undocumented stay in the United States, even if they have a valid deportation order, holders of the program are entitled to a temporary work permit valid for the same period of time as the revalidation.

Experts have pointed out that those who do not comply with El Salvador’s TPS registration term run the risk of losing all their rights to stay in the United States.

Salvadoran TPS beneficiaries must be enrolled in the program and demonstrate continuous residence in the United States on or before March 9, 2001.

For those Salvadorans residing in New York, the consulate of El Salvador makes available help to fill out the forms I-821 and the I – 765.
