Dead Space remake has new side quests, Isaac is no longer just following orders

The Dead Space remake is just a couple of weeks away, and new details about how Montreal developer Motive Studio is updating the game keep leaking out. While the new Dead Space retains the familiar features of the original game, its script has been completely rewritten. In the past, the developers have implied that this was mostly because they needed to be given something to say to the non-dumb Isaac Clarke, but it looks like the rewrite goes a little further than that.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. A lot of it was about leaving the things that made the game so great and improving the ones that were problematic where we thought we could do better. It was often difficult to walk that line, but I think we found a really good balance.”

Apparently, the role of a number of characters, including the likes of Nicole and Mercer, and even secondary characters such as Jacob Temple and Elizabeth Cross, has expanded significantly. According to Dead Space Director of Implementation Joel McMillan, some of these characters will have full-fledged side quests dedicated to them, which will give you a new perspective on the destruction of Ishimura.

“That’s right, it was important to give them more background, depth and motivation to make the personal connections feel more meaningful. So there are some very interesting themes that players can discover through the new side quests.”

But then again, the character that has undergone the biggest change is Isaac Clarke himself. In the original game, Ayek felt like an underappreciated errand boy, but that will change. According to Dead Space creative director Roman Campos-Oriola, Isaac is now able to discuss decisions with other characters, and his reasons for doing things end up having more to do with his engineering abilities.

“Now he is a little more involved in events and problem solving. He’s part of the conversation. And it gives the character more depth; it gives him more freedom of action.”

Dead Space Remake will release on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 on January 27th.
