In recent years, Resident Evil has received many loving remakes from the publisher Capcom. After all those awesome horror games, it’s now time for something lighter. This time Dead Rising is getting an extensive remaster. For the first time since 2016, we can deal with zombies again with the coolest homemade weapons. There is a lot at stake because if the remaster is successful, a new game could be on the way as well. Lawnmower in hand, we checked out the Willamette Parkview shopping center.
You will once again take on the role of Frank West, a rude journalist who comes to investigate a military quarantine in the small town of Willamette. After witnessing several violent incidents from his helicopter, they land on the roof of the local shopping mall. That’s a bit like the movie Dawn of the Dead and the game is also full of references to the original 1978 movie Frank has 72 hours to solve the mystery of Willamette. During this time he must defeat hordes of zombies, bring people to safety and use his best journalistic skills.
Frank can only survive by turning the entire shopping center inside out. You are always looking for weapons, vehicles, food, protective or funny clothes, etc. You can use almost anything that is not attached to the wall as a weapon. A big part of the fun is picking things up and seeing how much damage they do. So you can go into a kitchen store and shop around with piping hot pans, knives, blenders and other fun items. Or why not have a toy store full of masks to put on zombie heads and stuffed animals and bats to go around. The possibilities seem endless.
In 2016, the first three games received an HD Remaster for the generation of game consoles at the time. So you might be wondering what the big difference is with the new Deluxe Remaster in 2024. Could you really get a third time? We can reassure you at this point that Capcom has addressed a laundry list of complaints fans had about the original in this remaster. The gameplay has changed, but the first thing that immediately stands out are the graphics.
The human characters have also become smarter and can fight more independently, so the missions of defenders do not necessarily end with a negative result. It is much more enjoyable to guide them through a pack of zombies. In addition, you can now walk while shooting, which technically makes it easier to play Dead Rising. The interface has been completely cleaned and much clearer to include all the information. A blue bar now makes it immediately clear how long a weapon can be used before it breaks. These and many other changes make Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster a much smoother experience.
The game uses the RE Engine that we have already seen in the latest Resident Evil games. With 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second, Dead Rising looks better than ever. Don’t expect the same visual excitement of Resident Evil, it’s simply not possible with such a large number of zombies on your screen. But small details are now clearly visible and the main characters and their facial animations in particular are very impressive. The game has also been adapted more to current standards and values. The “Erotica” system where you were rewarded for taking close-ups of female characters is gone, the “Frank the Pimp” performance has been given a more subtle name and the Larry Chiang character has been made less stereotypical.
