According to a new study conducted in New Zealand, the next devastating earthquakes could be affected by ancient dead creatures or small animals that were buried beneath the surface of the oceans millions of years ago. If they actually cause another of these, the consequences will be dire. At least that’s what scientists say.
Scientists say long-dead marine organisms could affect the intensity of the next devastating earthquake along the Hikurangi subduction zone. This is the largest nearby break in New Zealand.
Dead creatures can cause devastating earthquakes
This area is said to be capable of generating mega-thrust earthquakes. Put simply, giant destructive earthquakes that usually produce magnitudes of 8 or more on the Richter scale.
A scale that is used as a measure to determine the intensity of any earthquake that occurs. New research shows that tiny, ancient marine organisms could play an important role in the region’s next earthquake.
Scientists have thus made a discovery never seen before.
In fact, the scientists involved in studying this region found that calcite deposits from ancient marine organisms can control the movement and even the level of friction between tectonic plates, such as the Pacific plate and the Australian plate.
The influence of these deposits in the plates can subsequently and theoretically affect the outcome of the next mega-earthquake, during which geological factors and other elements will still be applied.
The next will be terrible, scientists say
Although earthquakes have been a completely natural phenomenon on Earth since time immemorial, if scientists’ predictions were really confirmed, a new and much more destructive one would come. The earthquakes that have so far plagued the Earth, and which have occurred mainly in those parts of the planet where tectonic plates intersect, such as the “Pacific Ring of Fire” located in the Pacific Ocean, would surely take on a whole new dimension.
