Shark alert in New York! After sharks had already appeared off the Turkish and Spanish coasts in the past few weeks, a serious incident has now also occurred in New York.
According to local police, a 16-year-old surfer was bitten on the foot off a Long Island beach. The surfer was only a few meters from the beach on his surfboard when the shark attacked him.
Attack last week
According to the authorities, the attack happened on Wednesday evening just before 6 p.m. local time. The boy was able to save himself on land on his own. There were no lifeguards on the beach.
The police searched the area in front of the beach with the helicopter. However, the shark could not be found.
Just last week, a 41-year-old surfer was attacked on another beach near New York. It was also only a few meters away from the beach, reports Fox News.
Further measures under examination
A dead white shark washed up on a beach in the mega-metropolis on Wednesday morning. According to the police, the cub was about 2.5 meters long.
Very few sharks have been sighted off New York until recently. According to experts, however, global warming and the ever cleaner waters off New York mean that animals are increasingly daring to approach the city.
The city government is now examining whether further measures need to be taken due to the increasing shark population. (zis)
