A helicopter belonging to the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo was shot at on Sunday. One South African member of the peacekeeping mission was killed, while another was seriously injured.
The helicopter had taken off from the northeastern city of Beni in the early afternoon and was en route to the southern city of Goma. Despite the shelling, the helicopter was able to land in Goma.
A statement from the UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO does not reveal who is responsible for the attack or what weapon was fired at the helicopter.
The UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has some 18,200 members and aims to help the Congolese government stabilize the country.
Last year, eight members of the UN peacekeeping mission were killed when their helicopter crashed in the eastern province of North Kivu. The Congolese army fought a rebel group there known as the M23.
