Four stabbings in the British city of Birmingham on the night from Saturday to Sunday killed a man and injured seven others, the British police announced during a press conference on Sunday. According to the police, the incidents are related. No offender has yet been arrested.
Two of the injured, a man and a woman, are in critical condition. The five others suffered no life-threatening injuries.
The police are looking for one suspect who is considered responsible for the stabbing.
Although the facts of the incident are still unclear, the police see no reason to treat the stabbings as a terrorist act or an incident related to criminal gangs in the area. “It appears to be a random action and the victims appear to have been chosen at random.”
The stabbings took place on the night from Saturday to Sunday in the center of the city. At around 12:30 am, the police received a report of a stabbing in Hurst Street. Shortly afterwards, several reports came in from the area, the last stabbing took place around 2.20 am.
According to BBC News the incidents took place near the district called ‘Gay Village’. During the incident, many people are said to have sat on the terraces in the entertainment area.
The police spoke of a “major incident” and closed a large area for investigation. Research is still being carried out at various locations in the city, including Livery Street, Irving Street and Hurst Street.
