Three people were killed in a knife attack Friday night in the German city of Solingen. Eight people were injured and several of them are in serious condition, according to the authorities. The perpetrator managed to escape, but late Saturday night the police announced that the suspected perpetrator had been arrested. The terrorist group Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Saturday evening, police arrested a person at a refugee shelter in Solingen. No further information has been released yet.
The city in North Rhine-Westphalia is celebrating its 650th anniversary and had a stage on a market square in the city. In front of this stage, the perpetrator stabbed people apparently at random. According to the police, the fatal victims are a 56-year-old woman and two men aged 67 and 56.
The attack was met with shock. Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke of a terrible crime. Many people laid flowers at the spot where the stabbing took place. Read more at Tagesschau
