N-VA chairman Bart De Wever regrets that the courage is still lacking to stop the “endless carousel of formation laps”. “Personally, I am convinced that a strong coalition agreement could be concluded,” he says in a video message on social media. His fellow preformer Paul Magnette has already responded. “It makes no sense to follow a track that has no chance of success”, he said, but he still believes in a solution.

“I know that making an agreement is much more difficult than torpedoing or calling a solution from the sidelines,” says De Wever, who thanks everyone who dared to stick their neck out. What the immediate future will bring is still unclear to De Wever.

De Wever emphasizes again that time is running out. “We are on the eve of particularly difficult weeks and months. Thousands of entrepreneurs are fighting to survive their business. The income of tens of thousands of families is at stake. In addition to corona, Brexit is now rapidly approaching us. Unfortunately, no one will feel this impact more than the Flemish. The social and economic challenges are unseen. ”

The N-VA chairman reiterates that he had therefore accepted an order with the PS to create a government around the two largest parties. “That was not an obvious mission. Nevertheless, we have reached a basic agreement. We found five parties willing to support this as a starting point for government negotiations. It was no one to take or leave. But it offered a solid foundation and a great chance of success. ”

According to him, the corona crisis proves “how inefficient our country is”. “Through reforms we must thoroughly strengthen the federal states, which still function at a democratic level. At the federal level, management of current affairs has become the normal course of business. That has to stop. Our starting note could count on seventy seats, just not enough. We needed one more party to form a full government. A government of limited duration, but with a strong program. ”

Magnette also responds

His fellow preformer Paul Magnette (PS) also responded to RTBF on Monday evening. He is talking about “the end of the exercise”. “Some don’t want to come, others want to come but don’t want to talk about social measures,” he said. “It makes no sense to follow a track that has no chance of success.”

But the door is not fully closed, Magnette also seems to admit. He had given himself fifty days to pass. “We have about 30 left,” said Magnette. “So you have to try everything.” He emphasized that his party has also made considerable effort to reach an agreement with N-VA. “Given the seriousness of the crisis and the political situation that is only getting worse, we have made this effort.”

He had the same message on RTL-TVI. “If everyone can make some effort, be constructive, then it is still possible to find a solution in the next three weeks, before the parliamentary return in mid-September. I am convinced of that ”, said Magnette.
