De Rossi and the Florida effect: what it is. The Roma coach cites one of the most famous psychology experiments

If you tell yourself too often that you risk being tired, at the right time – that is, at the wrong time – you will be tired. Because words influence our behaviors. Daniele De Rossi professor on the pitch – where he revolutionized the season, victory after victory Roma – and professor in front of the microphones, where he dispenses words that clash with the prevailing banality.

Jacobs and Donnarumma’s mental coach: “I train their minds to win”

De Rossi, the calendar and the cultured quote

On the eve of the match at the Olimpico with Bologna, the Giallorossi coach mentioned “the Florida effect”, as a psychology professor would have done from a university chair. Instead we were talking about football and the Football League’s decision to play the remaining minutes of the match on Thursday 25 April Udinese-Romamatch suspended on Sunday 14 April due to illness on the pitch I’m sorry. The Friedkin club had requested the postponement to avoid the accumulation of decisive matches in a few days (on Sunday 28th there will be the match against Napoli, the following Thursday the first leg of the semi-final of Europa League with the Bayer Leverkusen). Postponement not granted by the Serie A League, with a subsequent Roma note full of bitterness.

But enough is enough, says De Rossi, citing the Florida effect, which the athletic trainer told him about Gianni Venturati when he was still a player. This is a powerful example of “priming”, which consists in the use of certain factors (specifically, words) to put a certain subject in a psychological state that influences his actions without his knowledge.

The 1996 experiment at New York University

The experiment was carried out in 1996 at New York University by professor John Bargh, who divided his students, aged between 18 and 22, into groups and asked each group to create sentences starting from five unconnected terms. Some were shown words related to old age, such as “Florida” (the place where many wealthy Americans move when they retire), “forgetful,” “bald,” “gray” and “wrinkle.” At the end of the task, the students were sent to an office at the end of a corridor, while the researchers, without being seen, measured the time it took them to pass through it. Well, the kids who had composed the sentences with the words related to old age walked down the corridor more slowly. The meaning of the experiment, applied to Roma’s very demanding calendar, is evident: if we continue to say that the team risks arriving at the Europa League match with little energy, this could happen. As De Rossi put it: “Repeating that we are tired and they haven’t protected us can be counterproductive. True, it happened, but enough is enough. I won’t tell the kids anymore.”

De Rossi: “Lotito made a mistake on Ndicka. Bologna is the most fascinating team in the championship.”

De Rossi and the great attention to the psychological and mental aspect

Further proof, if any more were needed, of how much the new Roma coach cares about the mental and psychological aspect of his players, who in just a few weeks has managed to transform from a disheartened group without great prospects into a winning and never giving up team , capable of reaching a European semi-final and getting ever closer to the goal of qualifying for the next Champions League,
