De Paul and Messi have played together in the Argentine national team since 2018. Both have won the Copa America 2021 for Albiceleste.
Four years together in the national team made the relationship between De Paul and Messi close. Not infrequently the two joked in free practice sessions.

When an interesting incident happened Argentina national team undergoing training in the United States before the duel against Honduras. Rodrigo De Paul caught slapping Lionel Messi.
Investigating a calibration, De Paul’s slap on Messi was apparently just a joke. The two then laughed together after being approached by another Argentine player, Leandro Paredes.
Though impressed rude, De Paul is actually very concerned about Messi. This was demonstrated when Argentina clashed with Honduras on Saturday (9/24/2022) WIB morning.
Messi was hacked by Deybi Flores to drop in the 39th minute. The violation ignited the emotions of De Paul who immediately approached Flores, so much so that the other players had to disband.
De Paul and several Argentine players with Flores stopped the game for a while. The match then resumed and ended for Argentina winning 3-0.
De Paul’s protective attitude towards Messi was revised after the match. The flea at that time he was surrounded by several Honduran officials who asked him to take a picture together.
One of the Honduran staff held Messi’s arm and asked him to take a picture with him. De Paul who saw this immediately separated the hand of the staff from the arm of Messi.
