David “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur, of the legendary hip-hop band De La Soul, has died.
Jolicoeur was 54 years old, reports Rolling Stone. He was one of three members of the pioneering hip-hop band De La Soul from Long Island, New York.
The cause of death is not known, but the artist has been open about the heart defect he has had for several years, writes NBC.
Formed in 1987, De La Soul is best known for the hit “Me, Myself and I” and the album “3 Feet High and Rising”, that album that remains a classic in hip-hop history.
Together with A Tribe Called Quest, the band was early on mixing jazz elements into hip-hop. After the debut album came “De La Soul is Dead”, which sold far less, but was also very well received.
Their most recent album, “And the anonymous Nobody”, came in 2016. Their music has not been available on streaming platforms, but the plan is for everything to be available in March, writes BBC.
De La Soul was part of a hip-hop tribute at the Grammys last week, but Trugoy was not in attendance.
