De la Fuente presents his team at the Foreign Ministry

The new head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Juan Ramón de la Fuente, announced part of the team that will accompany him in his management at the head of the agency in charge of the country’s foreign policy.

This morning, in his first message to the Foreign Ministry community and members of the Mexican Foreign Service (SEM), the official reported the ratification as Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs of Ambassador María Teresa Mercado.

“She is the undersecretary of the branch, she is the second in command, she has my full support and all my trust, you have earned the recognition,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, in the undersecretary of Latin America and the Caribbean, the chancellor appointed ambassador Raquel Serur, who in recent months was in charge of the Mexican embassy in Ecuador, when the government of that country illegally broke into the diplomatic headquarters. As a result of this diplomatic conflict, the Ecuadorian administration named her persona non grata.

Ambassador Enrique Ochoa will be in the Undersecretary of Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights. A recognized multilateralist with extensive experience in the foreign service.

Another of De la Fuente’s ratifications in the Foreign Ministry team is that of Roberto Velasco at the head of the North American Unit.

“You have a very complicated task ahead of you, you know these terrains well and in the coming weeks and months I anticipate that you are going to have a lot of work and we have to face these challenges successfully,” the chancellor told the official.

In the Legal Department, the secretary appointed Pablo Arrocha, a recognized internationalist in the context of the United Nations.

Meanwhile, in the new General Coordination of Consulates—a new area that President Cláudia Sheimbaum will give priority to providing care and protection to Mexican migrants in the United States—the chancellor appointed a member of his former team when he was rector of UNAM, lawyer Jorge Islas, who was recently consul of Mexico in New York. In 2007 the lawyer sought the direction of the UNAM Law School, but a movement of academics and students opposed his arrival to that position.
