De Jonge: rising corona figures very worrying

The government is very concerned about the rapidly increasing number of corona cases. The number of people who end up in hospital with corona has increased much faster than expected, said outgoing minister De Jonge this morning before a consultation about the formation.

De Jonge will not further explain the concerns until after cabinet consultations later in the day, but he has already indicated that “we will have to relate” to those “rapidly increasing figures”. He did not comment on the possible introduction of additional measures.

The outgoing cabinet will evaluate the current corona measures on 5 November. According to some doctors it is too late and be intervened earlier.

Recording stop

The number of hospital admissions is now comparable to May, which means that the intensive care unit in Tiel, for example, is almost fully occupied again. Hospitals in South Holland are discussing the spread reception of corona patients this morning, the Haga Hospital in The Hague said. The hospital imposed a temporary admission stop yesterday due to the threat of overcrowding. Ambulances were instructed to take patients to other hospitals in the region.

Because the vaccination rate is no longer really rising, doctors and experts think that more measures should be taken.

The reintroduction of the mask obligation, stricter checks on QR codes or the faster use of a third injection are mentioned by them as possible means of stopping the rapid spread of the virus.

The question is whether the cabinet wants to say something about this this afternoon. This usually does not happen before the OMT (Outbreak Management Team) comes up with an advice. That is expected next Friday.
