De Jong saves PSV Eindhoven’s 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund – – 2024-02-23 17:55:30

Luuk de Jong converted a penalty that leveled the score after his former teammate Donyell Malen’s opening goal, and PSV Eindhoven and Borussia Dortmund drew 1-1 in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday.

Malen scored against his former club in the 24th minute with a shot that grazed the outstretched leg of defender Sergiño Dest. Malen avoided celebrating his first goal in the tournament since December 2021, instead raising his hands in an apologetic gesture.

For PSV fans, the scene was familiar. Malen scored 50 goals in 81 games for the Dutch club between 2018-21. The crowd at PSV’s stadium cheered Malen when he was substituted near the end.

De Jong achieved equality by taking the penalty low to beat goalkeeper Alexander Mayer in the 56th minute after Mats Hummels had brought down Malik Tillman. De Jong became PSV’s top scorer in the Champions League, reaching eight goals, one more than Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Dest missed the winning goal in the final stretch when Julian Ryerson’s mark was taken out on the left. But Meyer, who saved for the injured Gregor Kobel, repelled the American full-back’s shot.

The second leg will be in Dortmund on March 13.
