“They didn’t pass Conte’s answering machine, I wanted to talk to him.” These are the words of Francesco De Gregori, in an interview given to Vanity Fair. To understand what the artist is referring to, we must go back to April 25th.

“Long live Italy. Italy freed Italy with dry eyes in the dark night. Long live Italy, Italy that is not afraid “, wrote Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on social media on the occasion of the Liberation Day, citing one of the most famous passages by De Gregori.

Today at Vanity Fair the singer-songwriter reveals that he wanted to speak with the Prime Minister to thank him, also taking the opportunity for a discussion on the difficulties of the show workers, who saw events suspended due to the Covid-19 emergency.

“During the quarantine I tried to contact the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. He had used some words from one of my songs to celebrate April 25th. I wanted to thank him and try to talk to him […] “Because beyond the verses of Viva Italia, sending a message to the country through a song seemed to me an implicit recognition of the usefulness of the songs”.

So De Gregori has chosen to try to contact the premier.

“So I decide to call Conte while knowing that he had and has his problems. It wasn’t that I wanted to entertain him, nor did I think they would pass it on to me right away. But I thought I could talk to his secretariat, leave a message, let him know that I was looking for him ” […] “Result? Nobody. The switchboard did not pass Conte’s answering machine to me and so I couldn’t even leave him a message. “

The singer-songwriter does not hide the displeasure in the face of the lack of response:

“I understand that he has a lot to do, but if I have to tell her the truth, I found him quite disappointing.”
