The match between De Graafschap and MVV Maastricht was temporarily halted on Friday. Referee Ingmar Oostrom stopped the game because supporters threw cups of beer on the field.
The incident took place after the 1-1 by MVV player Ruben van Bommel, the son of Mark van Bommel, in the 31st minute. Fans in the MVV section threw cups of beer on the field out of joy, after which Oostrom directed the players to the changing rooms. Five minutes later, the game resumed.
Oostrom followed the rules that the KNVB tightened up last month after the events in De Kuip during the cup match between Feyenoord and Ajax (1-2). During that match, Ajax player Davy Klaassen was hit with an object from the audience.
It is not the first time that a match in the Kitchen Champion Division has been stopped due to objects on the field. Last month, NAC Breda-Willem II was even permanently shut down because fans threw fireworks and objects on the field.
In the Eredivisie, things went wrong at FC Groningen-NEC last month. That game was permanently stopped because a supporter had hit the linesman with a cup of beer. A day later Ajax-PSV was temporarily stopped because a fan had thrown a cup on the field.
The match between De Graafschap and MVV started ten minutes later because the Limburg team’s bus had been delayed on the way.
