De Croo: ‘When the vaccine is ready, vaccinations can start on …

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open VLD) makes a case that our country can start vaccinating the population from 5 January. That is, if the vaccines are approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

The ministers of health of our country could not come to an agreement on Wednesday in the Interministerial Conference (IMC) Public Health on a vaccination strategy around Covid-19. The issue will be discussed again on Thursday at a new IMC, but according to Prime Minister De Croo, there is already a concrete proposal for strategy on the table. It states that the vaccinations can start from January 5. ‘When the vaccines are ready, our country will be ready and we will have clear agreements about who will be vaccinated first and how that will be done,’ says De Croo.

The prime minister is convinced that the plan will be approved ‘in the very short term’. In concrete terms, according to De Croo, the intention is to start with vaccinations from 5 January, provided there is a green light from the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

‘There is no time to lose, but we will be ready by January 5, just like other countries. The vaccines still have to be approved at European level. But as soon as the vaccines are ready, we as a country will be ready to vaccinate as many Belgians as possible as soon as possible, ‘says De Croo.
