The President of the Autonomous City of Melilla, Eduardo de Castro (Mixed Group), celebrated this Thursday from Brussels that “Melilla was the epicenter of the debate in the 152nd edition of the Plenary Session of the European Committee of the Regions”, after the member of the Committee , MEP François Decoster (Renew Europe), “defended that everything that happens in Melilla, as a European territory, has the attention of this body”.
Eduardo de Castro highlighted that Decoster “has shown concern for the European policy that is developing on the external borders of the Union” and assures that he asked himself “Why don’t we have a Frontex unit in Melilla? Why in Melilla We haven’t had the same Calais reaction with the massive mobilization of migrants in November 2021?
Melilla’s first authority said Decoster “showed his support for Melilla and its people” and recalled when he visited the Spanish North African city with other colleagues last August. “This expedition helped Commissioner Ylva Johansson get to know the migratory peculiarities of Melilla through the three members of the Committee” said De Castro, adding that “Franois Decoster recalled that next February the Commissioner will participate in the plenary session of the Committee to discuss of this matter”.
According to the president of Melilla from the European capital “Franois Decoster put Melilla’s name explaining the problems we have with the border and with respect to the pressures we suffer from Morocco”. In this sense, he said that the member of the European Committee of the Regions “has insisted on the need to support Melilla”.
The president of Melilla was present on Wednesday at the preparatory meeting for this speech, which this Thursday served “to place Melilla in a privileged point of the European debate”, underlined De Castro.
With this presence of the City in the European Committee of the Regions, President Eduardo de Castro’s three days in Brussels ended. “The result of months of contacts with the European institutions has led Melilla to greater prominence in the European organizations, thanks to the dialogue with the European representatives and the president” he underlined.
Finally, he underlined that “the work carried out in these three days is aimed at achieving Melilla’s participation in the decision-making process thanks to the creation of an office in Brussels”. In this sense, President De Castro has indicated that he “continues to progress in this objective which will lead to the generation of a context that is able to bring the voice of the City to the heart of Europe”.
