Frank de Boer has no intention of stepping down or fearing that he will be fired as an Atlanta United trainer after the group stage elimination of the MLS’s Back tournament. The Noord-Hollander firmly believes in a turnaround.
Atlanta also lost its third game at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida on Tuesday, 0-1 to Columbus Crew, after previous losses with the same numbers against New York Red Bulls and FC Cincinnati. The team therefore ended desolate at the bottom of the group.
De Boer, who is in his second season with Atlanta, was therefore asked at the press conference afterwards whether he plans to leave or fears dismissal. He answered both questions with a resounding “no”.
“Everyone is of course very disappointed by this damper, myself in the first place. Let me put that first. I can only say that I always do my best and that I will continue to do so until the end,” said De Boer to the present journalists.
“Convinced we can change it with these players”
Atlanta just started as one of the favorites in the MLS’s Back tournament. The 2018 national champion has not scored four games in a row. This is partly due to the absence of the seriously injured star player Josef Martínez, the top scorer of recent years.
“I know that I can turn this negative feeling into a positive feeling. We proved that last season, when we also started quite rusty. I am convinced that we can change it with these players. If I go to the second half look, that’s what I want to see from my team, “says De Boer.
The MLS is Back tournament is an event in which many MLS clubs participate in the run-up to the restart of the season. The MLS was shut down after two rounds of play in March due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and it is not yet known when the season will resume.
