De Blasio declares war on gun violence in NYC

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio kicked off his press conference by announcing the creation of a large-capacity vaccination site for Rockaways residents, which will be located on 39th Beach Street. There will also be some temporary sites.

Regarding the municipal inoculation campaign, he announced that a new vaccination site will be installed at the JFK airport, in terminal 5, to serve the employees of this air port.

The Mayor also announced that New York City will fund a community center next to the new 116 Police Station in Queens. This enclosure will respond to calls from the community; likewise, it will allocate resources where they are needed, ensuring that funds reach the community.

He highlighted the creation of the municipal program Safe Summer NYC, which will be dedicated to raising awareness about the consequences of illegal possession of weapons; and at the same time, it will highlight the positive aspects of keeping young people away from guns. This work involves cooperation between members of the community, the police, and the courts, where each party collaborates with their own efforts.

During his participation in the press conference, the head of the NYPD Department, Rodney Harrison, reiterated that the strategy to be followed will be a shared approach between the authority and the community. This collaboration will focus on stopping the presence of weapons in the streets and the violence that results from it.

For her part, the district attorney for the district of Queens, Melinda Katz, pointed out that the judicial perspective must break the vicious circle that armed violence inherits on the streets of New York.
