Department store chain De Bijenkorf is cutting 64 jobs at its head office in Amsterdam. The company says the reorganization is necessary “given the challenging retail environment.”

De Bijenkorf wants to save costs by working with fewer managers at the head office and merging a number of departments. A week ago, the chain announced that it would cut 37 managerial jobs in the stores.

When publishing the 2022 annual figures last month, Bijenkorf said it was suffering from increased costs of, among other things, energy, transport, packaging and personnel. The company made what it said was a “very modest” operating profit of 2.8 million euros last year. “Consumers are increasingly keeping their hands on their purse strings,” Bijenkorf CEO Giovanni Colauto said at the time.

The company is working on a social plan for employees at the head office and in the stores who will lose their jobs.
