In the first round of the men’s giant slalom, a Nonstaler caused the big surprise: while Alexis Pinturault set the fastest time, Luca De Aliprandini sensationally finished second.

De Alipandrini showed a lot on the demanding course and raced to 2nd place with a flawless drive in fantastic conditions. Only Alexis Pinturault was faster than the Azzurro, who benefited from the course set by his coach and took the lead at halftime with an almost perfect run. At the halfway point of the race, the French top favorite is 40 hundredths ahead of De Aliprandini.

In third and fourth place are Alexander Schmid from Germany (+0.56 seconds) and Mathieu Faivre from France (+0.58) – besides De Aliprandini they were the only runners who were able to keep their gap to Pinturault within reasonable limits. There is already a huge gap behind the top 4: The fifth-placed Swiss Loic Meillard lost 1.25 seconds on the fastest time.

Tonetti in den Top-15

Riccardo Tonetti, who was the only South Tyrolean to tackle the giant slalom, was in 14th place. The Bolzano all-rounder remained without major blunders and goes into the second round with a mortgage of 2.23 seconds. The remaining Azzurri Giovanni Borsotti (19th) and Giovanni Franzoni (23rd) can be found in the lower regions of the top 30.
