“DDR5 RAM Prices Won’t Equalize with DDR4 Anytime Soon: Industry Insights”

memory RAM DDR5 arrived at home at the end of 2021. All thanks to the premiere of processors Intel Alder Lake-S and dedicated motherboards with Intel 600 chipsets. Currently, this standard is supported not only by the Blues, but also by the Reds thanks to the family AMD Ryzen 7000.

DDR5 and DDR4 prices on par? Not in this year!

The first DDR5 RAM modules were extremely expensive and not much more efficient than the flagship DDR4 models. This has changed over time. Currently, we are talking about memories with a clock speed of over 8000 MHz, and prices have come down to an acceptable level. However, if you’ve been waiting for further cuts, we don’t have good news.

The Taiwanese editorial office of DigiTimes, citing its sources in the industry, claims that the decline in DDR5 RAM prices will soon slow down significantly or stop altogether. Earlier assumptions about equalizing the prices of DDR5 modules with DDR4 in stores this year can be put between fairy tales. There are several reasons.

First of all, both AMD and Intel already offer processors that support the new standard on a large scale. Meaning that demand is much higher than a year ago. And it’s both on the market of ready-made PCs, laptops and DIY.

Secondly, manufacturers of DRAM chips such as Samsung, Micron or SK hynix – although DigiTimes does not mention a specific company by name – delay deliveries to manufacturers of RAM modules such as G.SKILL, Kingston, ADATA and others. The reason is unfortunately unknown, although an insufficient number of high-performance bones can be assumed.

Thirdly, finally there is a lack of power management chips for server-grade DDR5 modules on the market. As reported recently by TrendForce, compatibility issues with PMIC and DDR5 RDIMM chips have been noticed. Manufacturers are working on a solution. The only company that hasn’t been affected is Monolithic Power Systems.

To what extent will all this actually affect prices in stores? Hard to say. However, in fact it seems that you have to come to terms with the idea that efficient DDR5 modules will not get much cheaper in the near future.
