DC United handed the Chicago Fire their fourth straight loss in a 4-0 victory on Saturday night.
In this duel between two teams fighting for their place in the playoffs, DC United beat their opponent of the day to ninth and last place giving access to the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. The team is only two points behind CF Montreal, beaten at home by the Columbus Crew.
The Fire, CFM’s next opponent on September 16, is now out of the playoff portrait.
Best player of the match, Christian Benteke opened the scoring after only 9 minutes of play before completing the double in added time at the end of the game. He also provided an assist on Ted Ku-DiPietro’s goal, which doubled the lead 11 minutes later.
Fire defender Carlos Teran then had bad luck scoring into his own net when the ball deflected off his foot as he fell snagging Ku-DiPietro. The referee was also preparing to call a penalty.
Chasing the 145th goal that would give him second most in MLS history behind Landon Donovan, Kei Kamara got a good chance in the 38th minute, but his shot was blocked by goalkeeper Alex Bono. He then missed a header from just outside the net.
The Whitecaps snatch a point in New York
The Vancouver Whitecaps took advantage of a second-half penalty to close a narrow one-goal deficit and snatch a draw at New York City FC.
With this result, Vancouver increases its record to 3-5-4 on the opposing courts this season. The Whitecaps are having some good times lately. Since their return from the Coupe des Ligues, they have suffered only one setback in four games, in addition to securing victory on two occasions.
For its part, New York ends the week with four points out of a possible six, after its 2-0 victory against CF Montreal on Wednesday. New York will play its next three home games, starting September 16.
With just one more point in the bank, New York misses a great opportunity to tentatively join the Chicago Fire in ninth place in the East, with 32 points.
New York was the first team to enter the score. In the 55th minute of play, Monsef Bakrar took advantage of a nice throw-in from Santiago Rodriguez to sneak past the Vancouver defenders and open the scoring with a shot between the legs of goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka.
The celebrations were short-lived, however, as the Whitecaps responded in the 60th minute of play. Ryan Gauld took advantage of a penalty to have the advantage over Matt Freese with a shot to the left of the goalkeeper.
The 1-1 tie remained intact and neither team managed to regain control of the game. In the duel, New York had the advantage with 65% possession of the ball. However, the team only hit three of their 16 shot attempts.
