Washington Police have released video from the body camera of one of the officers who were allegedly involved in a speed race that ended in an accident in the northeast of the city.
One of the four officers involved has been fired, according to the department.
The events were recorded on April 22. Two patrol cars with two uniforms in each car stopped on Anacostia Avenue at about 5:15 pm and later participated in a “reckless driving incident,” authorities said.
Images show officers in one of the patrols starting and driving for about 30 seconds. Then the air bag is deployed.
A report released on April 26 indicates that the two vehicles were traveling southbound side by side at “high speed” in a 25-mile-per-hour zone. One of the drivers tried to turn left in front of the other car, and onto Polk Street NE, when the two collided.
The video does not show the faces of the officers and does not have audio from before the crash but after. In this one of the police officers is heard saying bad words as he leaves the patrol car. Then he says that he is “fine.”
“Obviously these kinds of things are unacceptable, they are shameful. It’s not something we’re going to tolerate, ”Chief Robert Contee said. “It is certainly something that I will not tolerate as head of the Metropolitan Police Department.”
The corporation specified that the fired officer was an employee “on probation.” The other three are under no-contact status pending an investigation by the city attorney general’s office and the department’s internal affairs bureau.
All officers sustained minor injuries but the patrols sustained significant damage. The agents have not been identified.
