DB carries out further exploratory drilling for the expansion south of Gummersbacher Straße

Next month, Deutsche Bahn (DB) will be conducting further ordnance surveys for the future expansion south of Gummersbacher Strasse. With the help of special equipment, experts are drilling around 1,000 holes between Gummersbacherstrasse and the Cologne Airport Business Park stop. The drilling is necessary to rule out the presence of metallic objects in the ground, such as ordnance from the Second World War.

Due to the construction work, there will be disruptions, particularly during the period Friday, September 6 (9pm) to Monday, September 16 (5am) to restrictions in train traffic. The trains on the lines RB 25, S 12 and S 19 are cancelled between Cologne Hansaring and Cologne Frankfurter Straße and between Horrem and Hennef (Sieg). As a replacement, buses will run between Cologne Messe/Deutz and Cologne Frankfurter Straße/Porz-Wahn. On the other sections affected by cancellations, passengers can use the KVB tram lines. In addition, there will be Nights 4/5 and 5/6 September (from 11.25 p.m. to 4.25 a.m. each day) as well as in the Nights 16/17–19/20 September (from 9pm to 5am each day) to partial outages on the above-mentioned lines.

Im Long-distance transport Only individual ICE and night trains will be diverted, without stopping at Cologne Central Station or Cologne Messe/Deutz, but partly with a stop in Cologne South.

The timetable changes are included in Deutsche Bahn’s online information systems and are announced via notices on the platforms. They are also available at bauinfos.deutschebahn.com/nrw and can be accessed via the “DB Construction Work” app.

Despite the use of state-of-the-art equipment, construction noise cannot be avoided. We ask travelers for their understanding.

Information about the expansion project

As part of the project, the existing route in the Cologne junction south of Gummersbacher Strasse to the Cologne/Bonn Airport junction is to be expanded from four to six tracks. One of the aims is to run local and long-distance trains on separate tracks in order to ensure more reliable train traffic in the busy railway junction.
