The streaming service DAZN has secured the exclusive transmission rights for a large part of the games in the Italian Serie A starting next season.
For around 840 million euros per season, the provider was awarded the contract for a period of three years, the league announced on Friday.
DAZN got the exclusive broadcasting rights for seven and the co-exclusive for three games per round. The latter is likely to share the streaming service with the pay broadcaster Sky.
The total of the entire deal should be below the value that Serie A received from the last TV contract (with Sky and DAZN).
Below the total of the current contract
For weeks, the league had not reached an agreement with the bidders and the clubs whose approval was required. Sufficient clubs voted for the DAZN offer with 16 out of 20 clubs so that the deal was fixed.
According to media reports, Sky had offered less with an offer of 750 million euros. For the co-exclusive package, the broadcaster’s offer of 70 million euros per season should be on the table, wrote several media.
So far, Sky and DAZN have also been operating in a hybrid model. The league took in 973 million euros per season, which would be well above what would now come together with DAZN and Sky.
Sky is considering objection
Even if a decision has now been made, the deal is not yet fixed. Sky is considering an appeal against the award.
The reason is that DAZN relies commercially and technically on the mobile communications provider TIM. According to Sky, this should have led to problems in the bidding process. For Italy’s football fans, it is important that the transmissions are distributed across all platforms and as many receiving devices as possible. That is not the case with DAZN and TIM.
