DAZN boss Thomas de Buhr speaks in an interview with SPORT BILD about new rights of the streaming service, new heads and the increased price.
SPORT BILD: Mr. de Buhr, DAZN will show 121 of the 137 Champions League games and 106 Bundesliga games from the coming season – more than ever. Where do you see DAZN in competition with Sky and Co.?
Thomas de Buhr (52): A new era is dawning for us because we exclusively show the Bundesliga on Fridays and Sundays as well as almost the entire Champions League. With our rights, we will be number one for all football fans from the coming season. We will be five years old this summer. We recently extended the Spanish league, which we will be showing live on DAZN from day one, for another five years. These are very special moments that we are very proud of.
Are the prices rising now?
DAZN’s DNA is always to be able to offer every fan a fair deal. The new monthly price will therefore be only 14.99 euros – as usual, with monthly cancellations. The new annual subscription also costs only 149.99 euros. On average, you pay around 12.50 euros per month for the annual subscription – that’s slightly more than the previous monthly price of 11.99 euros. This is an excellent offer for all fans.
DAZN is currently available for 15-minute preliminary reports plus a supporting program. Are you going to expand that?
For selected Bundesliga and Champions League games, we will be offering fans even more preliminary reporting from August and will be back at the stadium for games after the end of the pandemic. The accompanying content around these competitions will also be expanded so that everyone can put together their own preliminary run on DAZN in the future.
So far there have been no DAZN conferences in the Champions League. What does it look like from 2021/22?
In addition to the individual games, we will also be offering conferences on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We currently favor a classic conference with its own commentators, as opposed to the “Goalzone”, which switches from single game to single game. As is typical for DAZN, we will also bring our own style to this conference.
How do you upgrade games?
We will continue to improve the fan experience on DAZN with new technical features: For example, with “Pulse” fans can receive push notifications from games that are running at the same time during a live broadcast. One click immediately takes you to the crucial scene and back again. Another new feature are the “Key Moments”. The most important actions of a game are made visible here. For example, if you get in later, you can call up a goal so quickly and don’t have to wait until half-time. We will also incorporate statistics into the live game very intuitively and available at the click of a button. Many more features are in the pipeline.

What else is there besides the live games?
On the one hand, we are expanding the range of DAZN Originals: The series “Ronaldo: El Presidente” is currently running about the Brazilian striker legend. Further top-class documentaries will follow in the course of the year. On the other hand, numerous show formats relating to our live rights are currently being developed. It is also certain that there will be a linear highlight show about the Bundesliga afternoon games on Saturdays from 5.30 p.m. In addition to live sports, we want to offer the fan content every day.
What does the staff look like?
Laura Wontorra will join us with her outstanding manner in live games and also in her own format and strengthen the team of moderators around Alex Schlüter and Daniel Herzog. With Sandro Wagner, we were able to retain one of the most sought-after experts in the long term. At the same time, Ralph Gunesch, Sebastian Kneißl and Jonas Hummels stay on board. Marco Hagemann, Jan Platte and Uli Hebel have also extended their commentary contracts. New additions are Michael Born and Joachim Hebel from Sky.
