A few days before he flew into space, Jeff Bezos donated $ 200 million to the Smithsonian Institution Research and Educational Museum, world agencies report.
This is the largest donation the institution has received since its founding in 1846, according to the Washington Post.
Of that, $ 130 million will be spent on setting up an educational center called Bezos. The remaining $ 70 million will be donated to renovate the National Aviation and Space Museum.
The future educational center will offer programs and activities that aim to encourage students’ interest in various sciences and technologies.
The Smithsonian is considered to be the largest museum, educational and research complex in the world.
“My love for science, inventions and space has helped me get here. I hope this donation does the same for others,” Bezos said.
The former CEO of Amazon, who resigned from the company on July 5, will fly into space on July 20. He will be accompanied by his brother Mark Bezos, 82-year-old Wally Funk, another anonymous passenger, who secured a seat on board for $ 28 million. Blue Origin plans to “launch” passengers to the Pocket Line, or about 100 kilometers from Earth.
