Day update Corona & Researchers RUG find weak spots in corona virus
Rural – RIVM reports 5,658 new COVID-19 infections. And 93 new hospitalizations and 89 new deaths have been reported.
Weekly overview: Total past 7 days 40073 COVID-19 infections and 609 new hospital admissions and 537 deaths.
Weak spots in the virus
Researchers from the University of Groningen, among others, have found weak spots in the genetic material of the corona virus. These can serve as targets for antiviral drugs against SARS-CoV2, as well as future new coronaviruses. Says Oogtv.nl
The researchers found at least eight regions in the virus’s genetic material that are a weak spot. Furthermore, small cavities have been found in a number of structures, which can serve as targets for small molecules that block the action of the virus. Pieces of genetic material can also be administered to patients that interfere with the functioning of the virus.
“Because a number of structures are also present in other coronaviruses, it means that a successful drug against SARS-CoV2 can also work against new virus strains in the future,” says research coordinator Danny Incarnato on the RUG website. “We have come up with a new way to find weak spots in large viral RNAs. We have thus laid the foundations for the development of innovative treatment methods targeted against RNA to combat SARS-CoV2 infections. ”
