The screening of the documentary “Cuba is Near” by journalist Mylenys Torres served as the culmination of the commemorations in the Russian capital on the occasion of the 98th birthday of the Commander-in-Chief of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
The work tells of the first of the 11 visits made by the Cuban leader to the then Soviet Union, as well as the memories of the protagonists of that moment and what that trip made in April 1963 represents for the current inhabitants of Russian cities such as Murmansk.
Prior to the screening of the documentary, Deputy Director of the Latin American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Andrei Guskov, stressed that many Russians were educated with knowledge of the ideals of the Cuban Revolution, and saw Fidel Castro as a true and loyal friend.
Guskov also pointed out that the Cuban leader had a lot to do with the forging and consolidation of the bonds of friendship between both countries, which persist despite the passage of time.
Torres said that while preparing the film, he met many people in Murmansk, where Fidel Castro visited the Soviet Union 61 years ago, who still remember the event that had a great impact on their lives.
“In the material, I wanted to convey the whole range of emotions that the presence of the Cuban leader provoked in ordinary Soviet people with his irresistible and dazzling grace, which he used to change the world and push history forward,” said the director of Cuba is Near.
After the premiere screening of the documentary, the Russian and Cuban friends shared songs with the musical group Grenada, which performed anthological pieces such as Cuba que Linda es Cuba, Hasta Siempre Comandante and Guantanamera.
The day of homage to Fidel Castro in the Russian capital began on August 13 with the laying of flowers at the monument inaugurated in November 2022 in honor of the Commander in Chief in the Sokol district of Moscow.
Representatives of the Russia-Cuba Friendship Society, the Fidel Castro Foundation and veteran Russian internationalists attended the monument to pay tribute to the illustrious Cuban revolutionary, in an event that is becoming a tradition among Russian friends of Cuba.
